Playing Our City

Calgary will be filled with the sound of music on Saturday, March 12, as Playing Our City, a Calgary JUNO Awards Host Committee initiative, comes to life.

Stationed at Central Library and Genesis Centre, Calgarians will collaborate with trained musicians to create music by “playing” their surroundings, ultimately producing an innovative live performance. The piece, composed by Laurie Radford and JUNO Award winner Allan Gordon Bell, will have citizens working together and experimenting with the traditionally non-musical elements of their locations, such as earth, stone, glass, human bodies, wind, and steel (just to name a few!).

There are two ways to get involved in Playing Our City:

Send us a video of you playing your surroundings, and it could be included in the final compilation (.mov files to be sent to playingourcity@gmail.com by Friday, March 4);

Join us March 12 at 2 p.m. for free events at the Central Library or Genesis Centre to learn the song and play it live. Both locations will be connected by high-speed internet so that performers can see and hear participants in other venues.

The performance will be live-streamed, and available online to national and international audiences. Grab a friend and start experimenting with sound. Show us, Calgary: how do you play your city?
